I walked out of Michael Jackson’s This Is It really impressed by two things. The first was Man in the Mirror (love that chorus), and the second was Orianthi.
After that, it was a pleasant surprise to hear her get some mainstream radio airplay. In a nice change from a lot of top 40 music, she does an excellent job of mixing a distinctly pop sound with some blistering guitar solos.
Thanks to the Olympics, I’m feeling that extra bit of Canadian pride. In the spirit of that, here’s some great Canadian music.
Anytime I compliment someone on their haircut, I’m thinking about this song. I doubt anyone finds this as amusing as I do.
No offense to Mandy Moore, but this song’s bass intro was the best thing about A Walk To Remember.

One of the many songs off Hello Nasty that completely caught me off guard. A perfect example of how experimental they can get on their albums.
I heard about this song through Dawson’s Creek of all places. The guitar always reminded me of Bob Seger’s Night Moves.
There’s this old Disney short called “Music Land”, where all the characters are musical instruments and they only speak through music. The guitar parts in this song are what I’d imagine a super relaxed guitar from Music Land would sound like.
I refuse to look up the lyrics to this one, because I’m pretty sure that it would make it infinitely less fun to sing along to.
The intro to this song off Passion Pit’s second album Gossamer, always struck me as sounding like Mariah Carey filtered through a SEGA Genesis.
After over 15 years with Geffen Records, Weezer signed with indie punk label Epitaph, and came out with Hurley. This song’s one of my favourites off the album, and features Michael Cera (of Arrested Development fame) on the mandolin.
