The intro to this song off Passion Pit’s second album Gossamer, always struck me as sounding like Mariah Carey filtered through a SEGA Genesis.

#songoftheday: Weezer – Hang On
After over 15 years with Geffen Records, Weezer signed with indie punk label Epitaph, and came out with Hurley. This song’s one of my favourites off the album, and features Michael Cera (of Arrested Development fame) on the mandolin.
#songoftheday: Erykah Badu – Tyrone (Live)
Music, theater, stand-up comedy, even pro-wrestling… all examples of art forms where crowd interaction, and reaction can completely change the experience.
This song from Erykah Badu is a perfect example. The studio version’s much slower, and comes across as more about bitterness and frustration. When you toss in a great crowd though, it comes across as a triumphant middle finger representing anyone who’s been unappreciated in a relationship.
#songoftheday: MGMT – Time to Pretend
Here’s the opening track from MGMT’s debut album Oracular Spectacular. The subject matter’s very similar to Nickelback’s Rockstar, but it’s a great example of diversity in execution when it comes to rock music.
#songoftheday: Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life
This hit from Third Eye Blind’s debut album remains one of my most listened to songs of all time.
You’ll never find more a more uplifting song about crippling meth addiction.
Third Eye Blind
Sometimes one of my favourite songs will start playing, and I just don’t feel like listening to it. Whether it’s been over-played, or just doesn’t fit my mood, I’ll hit that “skip track” button without a second thought. That said, I’ve never found myself not in the mood to listen to Third Eye Blind.
With a music collection consisting of a single rap album, it was time to diversify. Big Shiny Tunes 2 introduced me to “Semi-Charmed Life”, and “Jumper” was one of my favourite songs on the radio, so Third Eye Blind seemed like a solid choice. It was time for a trip to Music World.
The thing is, Third Eye Blind wasn’t just lumped in with all the other “Rock/Pop” music. No, this CD was nestled snugly in the “Alternative” section. I still remember the look on my mom’s face when I picked this gem up off the shelf. She looked at that ominous Alternative label, looked back at me with an unsure expression, and asked, “Are you sure this is the one you want?” Wanting some of that bad-boy cred that could only come along with getting your mom to buy you a CD in the Alternative section, I said yes without skipping a beat.
Honestly, the lyrical content went way over my head at the time. I cared more about the “do-do-doo”s, and “I would understa-ia-iand”s from the choruses, than the lyrics about meth addiction, and suicide attempts. But that’s the magic of this album. They managed to make upbeat, sing-a-long tunes about some genuinely dark stuff.
The rapid-fire delivery of the lyrics may have helped mask some of this to an extent. I mean listen to anybody sing along to “Semi-Charmed Life”. With the background music turned down, it probably sounds a lot like, “The sky was gold, it was woze, I was takin’ sip sabba dabba nose…*mumble mumble chorus*”.
Over the years, the album’s just grown on me more and more. No matter what’s going on in my life, or what mood I happen to be in, there’s always a Third Eye Blind track that fits the moment. Individual songs that manage to be both sombre, and hopeful at the same time. Simultaneously energetic and relaxing. Take “Motorcycle Drive By” for example. It has this calm, melodic, acoustic intro that tells a story of love found and lost. As the tempo picks up, more instruments kick in, and sadness transforms to acceptance and optimism. All that, and it doesn’t even have a traditional chorus. Just a kind of pre-chorus that serves as a constant buildup to more of a realization, than a resolution.
I don’t know that I’d label Third Eye Blind as my favourite album of all time, but I can pretty much guarantee that it’s seen the most playtime.
#songoftheday: INXS – Need You Tonight
Back in 2005, the surviving members of INXS got together, and did a reality show to find a new lead singer. It all seemed like a bit of an American Idol ripoff in concept, but ended up being surprisingly good.
The thing is, instead of just random people off the street that could sing, most of the contestants were members of indie rock groups. Performing original content was actually part of the gig.
Here’s a clip to compare against the other talent shows from the time:
#songoftheday: AC/DC – Walk All Over You
AC/DC always struck me has a band that really knew how to do a great intro. Thunderstruck, Hells Bells, Riff Raff, If You Want Blood (You Got it)…the list goes on and on.
Going around 30 seconds before the vocals even kick in is practically a given in an one of their songs.
Of all these intros, I’m pretty sure this song from Highway to Hell has my favourite. It’s just too bad they rarely play it live.
#songoftheday: SR-71 – Right Now
I’m pretty sure this pop-punk hit was in the majority of early ’00s teen movies.
SR-71 didn’t pump out too many more hits, but their lead singer moved on to a prolific career co-writing music for such Disney teen hits as Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers.
#songoftheday: C2C – Down the Road
Todays mandate: have some fun with genre classifications.
As far as this song goes, I’m gonna say electro-pop-blues-funk.
